Is double texting bad?

The rule says never double text. The rule is wrong often enough to be useless.

What matters is what the second message is doing.

The 2nd message that is fine

You forgot something. You have new information. You are answering your own question.

All of that reads as a person having a thought. Nobody has ever been put off by it.

The 2nd message that is not

It asks the first message again in different words. "hey" — then "you there?" — then "ok".

That sequence communicates exactly 1 thing: that the silence is costing you something. It does not communicate what you wanted.

The test

Would you send this exact message if they had replied warmly 5 minutes ago?

If no, it is not a second message. It is the first one, repeated.

How long between the 2

There is no number here either, but there is a shape. The second message should be about something. It should not be about the gap.

What ZZEND does with this

Paste both drafts. It tells you which one this person is likelier to answer, and whether the second one is worth sending at all.

Sometimes the answer is that the first message was fine and the wait is the hard part.
