Read it once more for the request rather than the tone. Sometimes there is no request in it at all, and replying as though there was one is the whole mistake.
A reply written to win the exchange and a reply written to still be talking next week are different messages.
Pick 1 before you type. Trying to do both is how a reply ends up 3 paragraphs long.
If your hands are shaking, the reply is about you. Anything written in that state gets rewritten by morning, and by then it has been read.
Say the part of theirs that is fair. Say your part plainly, once. Then stop.
The stopping is the step people skip, and it is the one that makes a reply readable. The paragraph that explains the first 2 is the paragraph that starts the next argument.
Sometimes the right reply today is no reply today. That is not the same as disappearing — it is not answering while you are still angry.
"Today, sending nothing is the better move" is a real answer, and producing it is not a failure.
