What is soft ghosting?

Updated September 23, 2026

Soft ghosting is when someone keeps reacting to your messages and stops answering them: a heart, a thumbs up, a laughing reaction, sitting on top of a message that asked something. It is not a no and it is not a yes, which is exactly what makes it hard to answer.

It happens in dating and in friendships and it looks the same in both — contact continues, content stops. The useful detail is usually in what your message contained: if yours had a day in it and his reaction did not, that gap is the answer you came looking for.

What this actually looks like

i got the job!! want to celebrate friday?

♥ liked · 2 minutes later

— nothing else —

A reaction inside 2 minutes, on a message that contained a day. The speed proves he saw it. The heart is what is left instead of an answer.

Both halves matter. If he had not seen it you would have a different problem, and an easier one. What you have instead is somebody who read a question with a date in it and chose the 1 response that acknowledges it without settling it.

What counts as soft ghosting

Soft ghosting, left on read, slow ghosting, ghosting

Being left on read is silence with a receipt — he reads your texts and does not answer, and nothing comes back at all. Ghosting is silence that keeps going. Slow ghosting is the same ending stretched out: replies that get thinner and further apart until they stop.

Soft ghosting sits apart from all 3, because something does come back. Contact continues, content stops. The thread stays technically alive while nothing in it moves.

It is worth separating because the answer differs. Silence gives you nothing to work with. A reaction gives you a timestamp and a choice he made, and both are readable.

What it usually means

Most often: he did not want to say no, and answering properly would have meant saying something. A reaction closes a message without ending it, and plenty of people reach for that without deciding anything at all.

Sometimes it is simpler than that — he read it walking somewhere and meant to come back to it. The way to tell them apart is not the reaction. It is what happens over the next 2 days, without you sending anything.

Soft ghosting in a friendship

The word gets used about friends at least as often as about dating, and the behaviour is identical: your voice notes get a heart, your “are you around this weekend” gets a thumbs up, and nobody ever says no to anything. The signs are the same 5 above.

One thing is different. With a friend the question of whether it is deliberate matters less, because there is usually no decision being avoided — only a message that was easier to acknowledge than to answer. The move that works is also the same: replace the open invitation with 1 specific day, and let a no be easy to give.

How to reopen it without repeating yourself

Do not resend the question. He saw it. Sending it again asks him to decline it twice.

Convert it into something specific. If you asked whether he was free sometime, come back with a day. A day is easier to answer than an invitation, even for someone who was avoiding the invitation.

Or let it stand. Leaving an unanswered question visible is a legitimate move, and it is often the one that gets an actual reply.

3 ways to reopen it

friday 8 then? or is saturday easier

Turn the like into a day. You are not repeating the question, you are shrinking it. Choosing between 2 evenings is easier to answer than an invitation, including for somebody who was avoiding the invitation.

if friday's not doable that's completely fine, we'll do it another time

Give the exit. If it was a soft no, this lets him say so without a scene, and you get the answer tonight rather than in 3 weeks of reactions.

(leave the question sitting there)

Send nothing. An unanswered question visible at the top of a thread is a legitimate thing to leave, and it gets a real reply surprisingly often. What does not work is the same question with new wording.

How to tell it apart from an ordinary week

Check who he is with the reaction button. Some people react to everything, and for them a heart carries almost no information at all. For somebody who has never used one on you before, the same heart is a whole sentence.

Then check whether anything else moved. If he is still answering properly in other threads and still watching your stories, the gap is aimed at this question rather than at his phone.

If nothing follows

2 days. Still inside a bad week for most people.

A week, with more reactions arriving. That is the pattern rather than a moment, and it is the point at which the word soft ghosting is earning its keep. Contact is continuing and content has stopped.

What not to do. Do not react back. A thread where both people are pressing hearts at each other has no way out of itself, and somebody has to use words first.

What ZZEND does with this

ZZEND reads the reaction against how this person normally behaves — some people react to everything, and for them a heart means almost nothing. For someone who never does, it means something else entirely.

It drafts the message that reopens it without asking twice, in your voice, and tells you whether to send it today.

Questions people ask

What is soft ghosting?

Soft ghosting is when someone stays in contact but stops actually answering: reactions instead of replies, likes instead of words. Nothing is refused, so there is nothing clear to respond to.

Is a like instead of a reply always soft ghosting?

One like is not. A run of them, on messages that asked something, is what the word describes. It depends heavily on the person: for someone who reacts to everything a heart means almost nothing, and for someone who never does it means a lot. There is a longer answer for the single like at he liked my message but didn't reply.

He reads my texts but doesn't reply. Is that soft ghosting?

No, that is being left on read, and it is a different problem. Soft ghosting is when something does come back, just never words: a reaction, a like, an emoji. If nothing comes back at all, read left on read instead.

What does soft ghosting look like in a friendship?

The same as in dating: hearts on your voice notes, a thumbs up on a plan, and no answer under any of it. Nothing is ever declined, so there is never a moment where you are allowed to be annoyed. Replace the open invitation with 1 specific day.

Is soft ghosting the same as slow ghosting?

No. Slow ghosting is replies that get thinner and further apart until they stop, so the thread is on its way to silence. Soft ghosting can sit still for months, because the reactions keep arriving on time and nothing ever reaches an end.

Is soft ghosting worse than being left on read?

It is not worse, it is harder to act on. Silence gives you nothing to work with, while a reaction keeps the thread alive without moving it, which is why people sit in it for weeks.

Should I double text after a soft ghost?

Do not send the same question again. If you send anything, send a different, smaller one — a specific day rather than a repeat of the invitation he already saw.
