The no contact rule, without the folklore

Every version of this rule comes with a number, and the numbers disagree with each other.

The number is the least useful thing about it.

What the period is for

It is not a signal you send. Treated as a signal it becomes a countdown you are running at somebody, and that is legible from the outside.

It is time in which you stop making things worse while you are not thinking clearly. That is the whole mechanism.

Why 30 rather than 45

We use 30. Not because 30 is the correct number — because more people finish 30.

A period nobody completes is not a period. It is 9 days followed by a message sent at 3am.

Where it breaks

Almost always between midnight and 4am, and almost always somewhere between day 3 and day 9. Not at the end — the end is easy.

It is rarely a long message. It is 1 line, sent fast, and then the whole thing restarts in your head.

What to do at 2am instead

Write it. Do not send it. Put it somewhere you will find it in 3 days, because in 3 days you will not recognise the person who wrote it.

Contact that does not feel like contact

Watching every story. Checking whether they are online. Rereading the old thread from the top.

None of it is contact, and all of it keeps you exactly where you were on day 1.

What ZZEND does with this

ZZEND counts the days and gives you 1 thing to do and 1 thing to avoid each day.

There is a button for 2am. What you write there stays in the app, and it shows it back to you a few days later.
