It means he is in the middle of deciding something, and he does not want to decide it with you waiting on the other end. What he is deciding is the part the text leaves out.
It can be a real pause with an end, or a slow way of saying no. You tell them apart by 2 things: whether the time came with a shape, and what was on the table when he said it.

They get treated as the same text. They are not. Space is about distance from you: fewer texts, less contact, for now. Time is about a question. Something is not decided yet, about the relationship, about a fight, about what he feels, and he is asking for room to answer it.
That changes what you are looking for. A question gets answered at some point, so time points at an end. The read is less "is he pulling away" and more "what is he deciding, and when."
Search "what does it mean when a guy says he needs time" and you get 2 kinds of answer: he is losing interest, or he is stressed. Both are true for somebody. Neither one is about him.
The same 4 words from a person who always takes a day to think are a different text from the same words sent by a person who has never asked you for anything.
Go back to his exact message, and the 1 right before it.
Then look at his history with you. Has he asked for time before? What ended it: did he come back with an answer, or did you have to reach out first?
What was on the table. Time asked for after a fight is about the fight. Time asked for after "what are we" is about that question. Different questions take different amounts of time.
Whether you already said yes. If he said "a few days" and you said "take the time you need," then day 3 is still inside the days you agreed to. A text on day 3 does not read as a check-in. It reads as taking the yes back.
How he usually replies. A slow texter going quiet for 2 days is his normal. A fast one going quiet is the change.
If he just sent it and you have not answered yet: agree, keep it short, and name what happens after.
Something like: i can give you a few days. i'd like us to talk after that.
That gives him the time, puts a soft end on it, and does not ask him to explain the pause right now. Do not ask "how long" or "is it me." Both are fair questions, and both ask him to decide the exact thing he just said he cannot decide yet.
It has been 3 days. You have typed "hey are you okay," then "i don't get what i did wrong," then something harder, then "sorry. ignore that." None of them are sent. Good. His silence inside the time he asked for is not his answer. It is a gap, and what you put in the gap tonight is the part you would take back.
Send nothing inside the days you agreed to. When they are up, 1 short message about the talk you both said would happen is enough. If he goes well past that with no word, that tells you something too, and 1 calm message is fair.
If he blocked you or told you to stop contacting him, that is not time. That is an answer. Do not push contact.
Paste the thread and it reads "I need time" against him rather than against a list: whether he gave it a shape, what question was open when he said it, and what happened the last time he asked for a pause.
It writes the reply back in 4 tones. If the time he asked for is not up yet, it tells you to hold off first, and still shows you the replies if you want to see them.
