What to text him after a fight

Every list of texts to send after an argument was written before anyone knew what your fight was about, or how this person behaves for the 2 days after one.

You already have that. It is in the thread. Here is how to read it, and what the first message after a fight is actually for.

Read your thread here first

Free to try. We never store your chats.

The first message is not the repair

People try to fix the whole argument in 1 text, and that is why the text gets long, and why the long one lands badly.

The first message after a fight has 1 job: make it safe to talk again. The actual conversation happens after that, and mostly not over text.

Which fight was it

The surface fight. Tone, timing, something said badly. These close fast if nobody defends themselves in message 1.

The old fight in new clothes. You have had this one before with different details. Sending a fix for today's version reads as missing the point, because it is.

The one where something real got said. Somebody named a thing they had been holding. That one does not want a quick patch — a quick patch reads as wanting it to go away.

The tell is usually in your own thread: is this shape familiar, or is it new for the 2 of you?

The shape that works — acknowledge, reflect, release

Acknowledge. Start with their side, in their words, not yours. "You were right that I brushed it off" does more than 3 paragraphs about what you meant.

Reflect. Say the part you actually see now. 1 sentence. Not a list of everything you have ever done wrong — that turns into its own thing to respond to.

Release. End without a demand attached. No "so can we talk tonight?" pinned to the end. Leaving the door open is stronger than holding it open by the handle.

3 short lines. If it is longer than the fight was, it is too long.

The 4 that make it worse

Apologizing for the wrong thing. "Sorry you felt that way" is not an apology and everyone can hear it.

The essay. A long message after a fight asks the other person to do work while they are still upset.

"We need to talk." It reads as a second argument being scheduled. (More on that one.)

"Are you still mad?" It asks them to manage your worry on top of their own. Whatever the answer is, this question makes it worse.

When the answer is: not today

Sometimes the read on the thread is that nothing you send tonight lands well, and the better move is to send nothing and go first tomorrow.

That is not giving up and it is not a rule about waiting a set number of days. It is about whether the last thing they said was still hot. If they asked for space in the last message, going quiet is the reply.

If he answers, but cold

A short flat reply after a fight is usually not a verdict. It is somebody testing whether the next thing you say restarts it.

Match the temperature, do not comment on it. Do not say "you seem off". Answer the small thing, normally, and let the next 2 exchanges be easy.

If it happens with him every time

Some people go quiet for a day and come back on their own. Some need the first message to come from you or nothing moves. Those need opposite things from you, and you can tell which one he is from the last few times, not from a rule.

What ZZEND does with this

Paste the argument and it reads it against this person, not a stranger — how he usually goes quiet, how long, what ended it last time, and what has been changing lately.

Then it writes the message in those 3 parts so you can edit each one, and tells you whether to send it now or in the morning. When it says hold off, it still gives you the message.

His messages are never stored. Only your own lines are saved, so the drafts sound like you.

Try it on your conversation
