It is usually true about right now, and it almost always gets read as true about forever. Both readings get texted badly.
The sentence is also doing 2 jobs at once: it is a fact about him and a piece of admin about the 2 of you. Which job it was doing depends entirely on when he said it.

Early, unprompted. Usually housekeeping. He is telling you the terms before anything gets built, and it is worth taking at face value.
Early, after you asked. Same sentence, less reliable, because it is also the easiest available answer to a question he was not ready for.
After months. This one is different. It is not information about his year, it is a decision about this, and the honest reading is closer to not with this than to not with anyone.
During a difficult stretch in his life. Often true and often temporary, and the mistake is waiting quietly for it to expire while acting as though it has not been said.
That's fine, me neither, when it is not. It buys the next 3 weeks and spends the 3 after that, because now the terms on the table are not yours.
The reassurance essay. A long message explaining how relaxed you are reads as the opposite of relaxed, and it makes the subject bigger than his sentence made it.
Nothing at all. Silence after that sentence gets read as either agreement or hurt, and he will pick one. Saying something short is better than letting him guess.
If you want the same thing. Same here, good to know we are on the same page. Then let what you both do carry it.
If you do not, and you want to keep going anyway. Say the real version. I do want something eventually. I am happy with this for now, and I will say something if that changes. That is not a demand, it is a notice, and it keeps the next conversation honest.
If you do not, and this is the answer. I appreciate you being straight with me. I am looking for something serious, so I do not think this is going to work for me. It can be warm and still be a decision.
Put a date on the check, even if only for yourself. Undefined arrangements do not get re-examined on their own, and 3 months passes quickly when every week is decided separately.
Watch what he does rather than what the sentence promised. People change their minds about this more often than they announce it, and they show it in scheduling long before they say it in words.
And do not treat waiting as a plan. It is a decision, and it is more comfortable to make once, out loud, than every Sunday night.
ZZEND reads his message against the whole conversation it came from, and against how he has talked to you before, so the reply it drafts answers the version of the sentence he actually sent.
You can edit every line, and it tells you whether tonight is the right time for it. It does not promise outcomes. It helps with the part that is yours.
Paste your chat — it's free to tryMost often it is true about his current situation. When it is said early and unprompted it is usually straightforward housekeeping. When it arrives after months together it is closer to a decision about this particular thing than a statement about his year.
People do change their minds, and they tend to show it in what they schedule before they say it in words. What does not work is waiting quietly and treating the waiting as a plan.
Something short and true. If you want the same thing, say so. If you do not, say that you do want something eventually and that you will say so if it stops working. Agreeing when you do not agree buys a few weeks and costs the ones after.
That is a decision rather than a strategy, and nobody can tell you the odds. What helps is making it deliberately, with a date to revisit it, instead of re-deciding every weekend.
