How do I keep the talking stage going?

Updated September 23, 2026

When a talking stage stalls it is almost never because it got boring. It is because every message in it has been doing only 1 of its 2 jobs: keeping things warm, without ever finding out whether this is going anywhere.

The talking stage is the part before anyone has said what this is, and you do not need a label to get an answer out of it. You need 1 message that hands him a specific day, instead of asking again whether he is free sometime.

What this actually looks like

this week's mad but i'm around next thursday or the saturday after

sounds good!!

— and then nothing about either day —

Enthusiasm, and no date. 5 weeks of exactly this is the talking stage stalling, and it is the most common version of it.

The reply is not cold and it is not a refusal. It is agreement with nothing attached, which is the easiest thing in the world to send and the hardest thing to do anything with. Nobody is behaving badly in that exchange. It just does not move.

What the talking stage looks like

Talking stage vs situationship

The talking stage is early and undecided. A situationship is undecided that has settled in. The texting problem is different in each: early, the question is whether he moves when given the chance. Later, the question is whether either of you is going to say the thing out loud.

If it has been months and the shape has not changed, you are probably not in the talking stage any more, whatever you are both calling it.

When it stalls

A stall is not silence. It is warmth with no movement — good replies, no days. The count that settles it is small: over the last month, how many times did you suggest seeing him, and how many actual days did he put forward?

3 and 0 is a pattern. 3 and 2 is a busy person. The messages feel identical either way, which is why counting beats reading.

The message that moves it

Give a day, do not ask for one. I'm free Thursday, want to get dinner? puts a decision in front of him. We should hang out sometime does not.

1 question per message. 2 questions reliably get 1 answer, and it will be the easier one.

Say the real thing plainly if you want it. Being clear is not the hard part. Being clear without it landing as an ultimatum is, and that is a wording problem, not a courage problem.

3 messages that move it

thursday 8, that place on the corner?

Day, time, place. 3 specifics. It is much easier to answer than an invitation, because saying yes costs 1 word and saying no costs 1 sentence. Vague plans survive vague follow-ups and die on concrete ones, which is exactly what you want.

are you free thursday? if not i'll make other plans that night, no drama either way

Make no cheap. The second clause is doing the work. It removes the cost of a straight answer, and people who were being polite will take it — which is the answer you were after.

i've liked this and i'd like to actually see you properly. is that something you want too?

The clear one. Being clear is not the hard part; being clear without it landing as an ultimatum is. That is a wording problem. Keep it to 2 sentences and ask about him rather than about the relationship.

When to send it

Daytime, midweek. A plan proposed at 11pm on a Saturday is a different proposal, and it gets answered as one.

If you have asked twice in a fortnight, do not ask a third time this week. The third ask does not produce new information; leaving a gap does, because it shows you whether he ever brings it back himself.

If nothing comes back

A couple of days. Nothing. Plenty of people leave a plan sitting while they work out their week.

A week, with other messages continuing. That is the real signal, and it is a specific one: he is happy to text and not to meet. Whether that is enough is a decision rather than a puzzle.

A month of the same shape. At that point you are no longer in the talking stage, whatever either of you is calling it. Nothing has to be declared, but it is worth being honest with yourself that the shape is the answer.

What ZZEND does with this

ZZEND reads the thread you already have with him, so it can say things like he answers warmly and never proposes a day, which is the part that actually decides what you send.

Then it drafts the message and calls the timing — including the days when the better move is to let his last message sit.

Questions people ask

What is the talking stage?

The period after you start texting regularly and before either of you has defined it. Nothing is agreed, nothing is exclusive, and both of you are still working out whether it goes further.

Talking stage vs situationship: what is the difference?

The talking stage is early and still moving. A situationship is the same lack of a definition after it has settled into a routine. The first is undecided, the second is decided by default.

Is it normal to not talk every day in the talking stage?

Yes. Daily contact is a habit, not a measure of interest. What is worth watching is not how often he texts but whether he ever moves things toward a specific day.

How do I keep a talking stage interesting?

Stop trying to. Talking stages rarely die of boredom, they die of staying flat: 6 weeks of pleasant messages that never turn into a Thursday. The thing that makes one interesting is that something is actually happening in it.

How do I save a talking stage that is dying?

1 specific invitation, and then let the answer be the answer. Do not send a message about the talking stage itself — asking what this is, at the point where it is fading, tends to end it politely rather than restart it.

Is the talking stage a waste of time?

Only the part of it that never gets tested. A few weeks of working out whether you like someone is normal; 4 months of the same warm messages with 0 days offered is not a stage, it is the shape the thing has settled into.

How long should the talking stage last?

There is no correct number of weeks. The useful signal is change: if the shape of it is the same in month 3 as it was in week 2, that is the information, not the calendar.
