How do I start a conversation with my ex?

Updated September 23, 2026

The opener is not where you say the hard thing. It is where you find out whether there is room to say it.

Almost every first message that fails does so because it was carrying 4 jobs. It apologised, explained, asked how he was, and asked for something, all in 1 screen. Give it 1 job and it gets much easier to write.

Read the thread before you write it

Read how it ended before you write anything

There is a large difference between an ending with an unanswered question in it and an ending where everything was said. The first leaves a door. The second does not, and an opener cannot make one.

Look at his last 3 messages before the silence, not your memory of the breakup. Memory keeps the loudest moment. The thread keeps the last real one, and that is the one he is still sitting in.

What the first message has to do

Make it easy to answer. That is the entire job. Easy means he can reply in 1 line without deciding what the 2 of you are now.

Which means it should be short, specific, and free of anything he has to fix. No status question, no summary of the last 6 months, no request for a conversation about the relationship. Those come later, if he answers, and only then.

4 openers that give him room

The specific thing. Something that belongs to him and to nothing else. Saw they finally reopened the place on 8th. Thought of you. It is a small door, and a small door is easier to walk through.

The clean acknowledgement. 1 sentence about what you saw, with nothing attached. I have been thinking about how that ended and I get it more now. Then stop. Do not add the ask.

The practical one. If there is an actual reason, use it plainly and do not decorate it. A real errand is easier to answer than a manufactured one, and he can tell the difference.

The honest short one. Hey. No agenda, just wanted to say hi. It works when it is true, and it reads badly when the next message is an agenda.

The first hour after he answers

Do not ask him to explain the gap in message 1. It is the most natural thing to want and it closes the door fastest, because the honest answer is usually something he is not ready to say yet.

Answer the message he actually sent. The gap will get discussed. It does not have to be discussed at minute 1.

And match his size. If he sends 1 line back, a 400 word reply tells him what this really is before either of you decided.

What ZZEND does with this

ZZEND reads your old thread with him, so the opener it drafts is built on how he actually talks and what he has already said, not on a list of lines written for strangers.

It also tells you whether today is the day. Okay to send, Wait a bit, Hold off, or Not enough to call it. Some days sending nothing is the better move, and it will say so.

Questions people ask

What is a good first text to send an ex?

Something short, specific to him, and easy to answer in 1 line. A detail he would recognise works better than a general hello, and much better than a message that asks him to sum up how he feels.

Should I apologise in the first message?

1 clean sentence about what you saw can work, if it ends there. An apology that also asks for something is 2 messages in 1, and the ask is the part he will answer.

How long should I wait before texting my ex?

There is no number that applies to everyone. What matters more is how it ended and whether anything is still open. If the last thing he said was that he needed it to stop, the time is not the deciding factor.

What if he does not reply?

One unanswered opener is not a verdict, and a second message that repeats the first makes the first smaller. If you send a follow up at all, let it be later and about something else.
