How do I respond to an apology text?

Updated September 23, 2026

It's fine ends the conversation. Most people do not want it ended. They want it finished, and those are different things.

The answer you send depends on something you have to decide first, and it is not how sorry he sounds. It is whether you are done with it, still in it, or not sure yet. All 3 have a real reply.

Read the apology before you answer it

There are 3 parts to one that lands: what he did, that he sees what it cost you, and what happens next. Most apology texts have 1 or 2.

The part people skip is the middle. Sorry I was short with you names the act. I know you had been waiting all day for that call is the part that makes it readable as an apology rather than an announcement.

You do not have to grade it. But noticing which part is missing tells you what your reply should ask for.

4 answers, depending on where you are

If you are actually done with it. Say so with something in it. Thank you for saying that. It did bother me, and I am good now. It closes the loop without pretending nothing happened.

If you are not done with it. Do not say fine. I appreciate you saying it. I am still a bit in it, can we talk properly tomorrow? That is not a punishment, it is a time.

If the missing part is what happens next. Name 1 thing, small and concrete. The part that got me was not hearing anything all day. Can you just send a line if it is going to be like that? 1 request is answerable. A list is a case.

If it is the same apology as last time. Then the reply is not about this incident. Say the pattern once, plainly, and in person if you can. Text is a bad room for the second version of a conversation.

What not to send

It's fine when it is not. It closes the subject and leaves the feeling, and the feeling comes back attached to something smaller next week.

The full history. An apology for Tuesday answered with everything since March turns his message into an opening statement and yours into a reply he has to defend against.

Nothing at all, for days, on purpose. Silence after an apology reads as a verdict, whether or not you meant one. I need a day is the same pause with the meaning attached.

If you are the one still upset a week later

That usually means the apology covered the act and not the cost. It is reasonable to go back, once, and say the part that was missing.

Bring 1 example rather than the category. What happened is easier to answer than who he is, and it is the version of the conversation that has somewhere to go.

What ZZEND does with this

ZZEND reads his apology against how he normally writes to you, and how the 2 of you have handled this before, then drafts an answer in 3 parts you can edit: acknowledge, reflect, release.

You can change any of it. Nothing sends from here, and his messages are not stored.

Questions people ask

What do I say when he apologises over text?

Something that says whether you are done with it or not. If you are, say thank you and name what bothered you in 1 line. If you are not, say that and give it a time. "It's fine" tends to end the conversation without finishing it.

Should I accept an apology I do not believe?

You do not have to answer it as accepted or rejected. "I appreciate you saying it, I am still a bit in it" is honest and leaves the conversation open, which is usually what is needed.

How do I respond to sorry without saying it's fine?

Name the thing rather than dismissing it. "Thank you, that mattered" or "that one did get to me, but we are good" both acknowledge the apology without erasing what happened.

He apologised but keeps doing it. What do I say?

Then the reply is about the pattern, not this instance. Say it once, with 1 concrete example and 1 concrete request, and if you can, say it somewhere other than text.
