He ghosted me and came back. What now?

Updated September 23, 2026

He is acting like nothing happened, and now you have to decide whether to act like that too. That is the whole problem, and it is a fair one to find difficult.

There is no rule that says you must answer today, and no rule that says answering means the gap is forgiven. Those 2 things got tangled together and they do not have to be.

Read the message he came back with

A clean restart with no reference to the gap. Hey, how have you been. Common, and it usually means he knows exactly how long it has been and has no comfortable way to raise it.

A restart with an explanation. Worth more, even if the explanation is thin, because he brought the subject himself rather than leaving you to.

A restart that asks for something. A favour, a plan, a late message. That one tells you what the return is for, which is useful information whatever you decide.

A restart with an apology. The rarest. It does not settle anything on its own, but it is the only version that starts the conversation where it actually stopped.

The question that comes before what to send

Not does he still like me. It is what do I want from this now, and it is easier to answer than it looks, because you have new information you did not have before: you know what he does when something gets hard.

1 disappearance is an event. If this is the second or third, it is a pattern, and the thing to weigh is not his reason this time. It is whether you want a thread that does this.

4 ways to answer

Answer the message, not the gap. If you want it open and you are not carrying anger about it, reply normally and let the subject come up when it comes up. It usually does.

Name it once, lightly. Hi. That was a long silence. How have you been? 1 sentence, no case, no question he has to sit an exam on. It says you noticed without making the reunion about the trial.

Ask directly. Before anything else, what happened there? Fair, and it gets you an answer you can use. Expect the honest version to be uncomfortable rather than dramatic.

Not today. You can leave it for a day and answer when you know what you want. Not as a move. Just because you do not have to decide tonight.

If you want it open again

Do not ask him to explain the gap in your first reply and then also plan something. Those 2 things pull in opposite directions and the message ends up doing neither.

Watch what happens over the next fortnight rather than the next hour. Whether it holds is not visible in his first 3 messages, and the first 3 messages are where most of the hope goes.

What ZZEND does with this

ZZEND still has the thread from before he disappeared, so his return gets read against how he was then, not as a message from a stranger. That is where the useful comparison lives.

It drafts the reply in your voice and calls the timing. Not answering today is a normal result here, and it will say so rather than push a message out.

Questions people ask

Why do people come back after ghosting?

Usually because the thing that made them disappear passed, and picking the conversation back up felt easier than explaining the silence. It is more often avoidance than a plan.

Should I reply to someone who ghosted me?

Only if you want to. Replying is not an agreement that nothing happened, and you can name the gap in 1 sentence without turning your answer into a case. You are also allowed to take a day.

Should I ask him why he disappeared?

It is a fair question and it gets you information. Ask it on its own rather than bundled with making plans, because a message that does both tends to get answered as only the second one.

He ghosted me twice. Is that different?

Yes. Once is an event and twice is a pattern, and the thing to weigh is not the reason he gives this time. It is whether you want a conversation that goes quiet when something gets hard.
